A 52-year-old man has been arrested for stealing DVDs in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. The 52-year-old man, unemployed and a resident of Kiyota (Sapporo) neighborhood, was arrested for the crime of robbery.

A man is suspected of stealing DVDs with a market value of 10,000 yen (about 78 US dollars) from a DVD store in Kitahiroshima around 2:30 pm on April 20th. An employee saw and hired a man who tried to take merchandise without going through the check out.

According to the police investigation report, the man admitted the charges during questioning, saying: “All I wanted to do was watch the anime on the DVDs». The news was shared on commentary forums in Japan, where it prompted comments such as:

«At 52, people who watch anime series and the like are crazy»; «What genre was the anime you were trying to steal? could say many things»; «Didn’t anyone tell you that you could sign up for a streaming service?»; «Maybe this guy doesn’t have a smartphone or a computer, and he can’t use the Internet»; «Isn’t anime consumption declining through BD / DVD today?»; «Would you rather steal a 10,000 yen record than sign up for a streaming service of a few hundred yen?»; «An unemployed 52-year-old who steals anime DVDs. I do not know what I think about it»; «Was it melted since the ice age? No one buys anime DVDs anymore!».
