It’s election season in Japan, and the election campaign works a little differently than in other countries. Wandering through the city, passers-by will receive election posters where candidates from all parties can post their individual posters, and will see (and hear) trucks and vans with loudspeakers mounted on them, slowly cruising through residential neighborhoods while fulfilling the promises. for their candidates.

What is not generally seen, however, is that celebrities support politicians who stand for election. Whether it’s about the general preference in Japan to keep entertainment and politics separate or because Japanese society does not attach as much importance to the personal views of actors and musicians in governmentwhen the candidates leave the campaign, they are usually not accompanied by any stars from the entertainment world.

So last week it was even a stranger to see Saeko Umemura, who is running for election to the Japanese House of Representatives, giving a speech outside Tokorozawa Station in Saitama Prefecture and his entourage including the Pikachu Pokémon.

What makes the scene particularly surreal is that Umemura is a member of the Communist Party of Japan, and Pikachu is one of the most lucrative private companies on the planet. However, fans will soon realize that the Pokémon seen alongside Umemura is not an officially licensed Pikachu outfit, but a highlight.

However, it is clear that Umemura wanted viewers to think that he supported Pikachu in his political ambitions, and the responses of Japanese Pokémon fans on Twitter did not accept the political pressure, with comments such as: “Prepare for the wrath of the Pokémon Company and Nintendo»; «Hello, Nintendo law department?»; «Even if it’s an imitation of Pikachu’s outfit, I shouldn’t do that»; «I cannot believe that someone with so much sense is running for parliament».
